Operation Coffee Cup
We will be having our third meeting and in doing the research I realized how important it is to keep current on a daily basis. So much is going on that we need to act when the issues are hot! I'll figure this out as I go but for those of you more savvy than I, please feel free to jump in with comments, suggestions, and helpful criticisms.

Terri asked me to discuss National Newspaper Week. Here is the information for those who are interested.
ReplyDeleteNational Newspaper Week is Oct. 4-10, 2009 and the theme is "Carrying the Torch of Freedom."
The press is free to cover what happens in government at all levels: local, state and national. It serves as the eyes and ears of the voters who can not attend all meetings and functions. The founding fathers of this country were concerned that the government might use its power to take advantage of private citizens.
Newspapers in this nation experience a degree of freedom unequaled in the world. That doesn't mean that outsiders have not tried to control their content. In fact, the press is often at odds with the government, big business or other special interest groups.
National Newspaper Week is our opportunity to hold our local newspapers accountable for "Carrying the Torch of Freedom." Is the Naples Daily News and the Fort Myers News Press doing a good job of holding the Administration and other government officials accountable?
This is a great week to "censor" the newspaper to see how good of a job they are doing, write a Letter to the Editor and include specific examples to compliment or encourage them to do a better job of keeping us informed.
Did our local newspapers have coverage of Van Jones, President Obama's Green Jobs Czar, prior to his resignation? This is just one example.
Remember the Letters to the Editor are limited to 250 words. You can email your letter to:
Naples Daily News - Editor,Jeff Lytle at:
jlytle@naplesnews.com
OR
Fort Myers News Press - copy and paste the link
and complete the online form to submit a letter.

We need to make sure our local papers "Carry the Torch of Freedom!"

ReplyDeleteDear Editor,
What Do YOU call me America?
A socially conscious American when I supported the Civil Rights movement?
A Patriot when I spoke out against President Nixon?
A right wing bigot when I supported Ronald Reagan?
A right wing anarchist when I opposed President Carters’ administration?
A Patriot when I opposed the war in Kuwait?
A socially unconscious American when I opposed the NAFTA treaty
for allowing lower standards of imported food and loss of jobs?
A right wing extremist when I opposed federal funding of abortion?
A stupid American when I object to the ban on offshore drilling in the US while our government allows China and Russia to drill off the coast of Key West?
An anti-gay, anti equal rights bigot when I object to the appointment of Ken Jennings for
our “safe school” czar because he belongs to an organization that promotes sex with young boys?
A racist when I disagree with President Obama on how he is handling the economy and trying to insert the government between me and my doctor?
A selfish American when I object to our government spending and taxing us into a third world country?
Is there no room for independent thinking in our country anymore?
WHAT do you call me America?

The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion. - Edmund Burke 1784
ReplyDeleteDelusion:
1. an act or instance of deluding
2. the state of being deluded
3. a false belief or opinion: delusions of grandeur
4. Psychiatry. a fixed false belief that is resistant to reason or confrontation with actual fact: a paranoid delusion.
Dictionary.com
Clearly the majority of the electorate, if not the majority of the population was under some delusion in November of 2008. They were deluded that they could elect a post-partisan, post-racial President despite the fact that his entire history had been racially polarizing, aggressively partisan and allied with the enemies of capitalism and rugged individualism. Now with his acolytes, Pelosi and Reid, President Obama seeks to continue the delusion so that we will give up our liberties.
They under-estimate the American people. Millions of people, some who saw it coming, others who hoped that their belief was not “resistant to reason or confrontation with actual fact,” are realizing that this is the time for action to preserve our liberties. Millions are awake and speaking out. They are joining together with other like-minded people to stop the erosion of our rights and liberties. We are fortunate that here in Southwest Florida there are groups that believe that it is not too late and are taking action to educate each other regarding how to maintain the spirit and principles of our founding fathers.
We are educating each other, writing letters and calling elected officials and standing for freedom against statism and collectivism.
